* Interzonal tournament in Portorož 1958 – Our pride and opportunity
The following year, 60 years will pass from the famous Portoroz Interzonall Tournament for the World Chess Championship. In the summer of 1958, in the Ljudski dom, a facility that has long since ceased to exist (today the Prekomorski brigad's Square is in this place), most of the most powerful chess players of the world gathered. In the end, the six best ranked candidates for the tournament one year later in Bled, Zagreb and Belgrade, which was the last step on the way to the match for the title of the world champion. Only the then world champion Mikhail Botvinik, who waited for the challenger, was missing in Portoroz, and Vasily Smislov and Paul Keres, who ranked directly on the tournament. Three future world champions, Mikhail Talj, Tigran Petrosjan and Robert Fischer, appeared in Portoroz. The latter was only 15 years old and won the title of the Grand Master, and he also ranked the Candidate Tournament. He declared him a miraculous child. Mihail Talj was the most successful at the Interzonal and the Tournament. "Pirat from Riga", as Talj had gained a nickname, on the basis of the Slovene / Yugoslav success in 1960 in Moscow challenged the current champion Mihail Botvinik and beat him; became the eighth official world chess champion. The "interzonal" Portoroz, the fourth in a row under the auspices of FIDE, is undoubtedly one of the largest chess tournaments on Slovenian soil. The tournament was the strongest in the earthquake in 1958. Everyone who has experienced the tournament excitedly tells us that the event was dominated by an inconceivable interest. Very clear is the statement given by Jule Lenassi, a journalist and tourist worker at that time: "Today it sounds incredible, but the promotion that Portoroz has experienced with the Interzonal tournament has made a huge contribution to the tourist boom of the place, which today the Slovenian tourist capital.
